Groundbreaking national basketball conference headlines Leicester Business Festival sport and health

The Leicester Business Festival, taking place between 23rd October and 3rd November will this year see the UK’s first, National Basketball Conference and Exhibition champion its Sport and Health sector.

‘#morethanbasketball’ will take place on Thursday 26th October from 9.30am to 3.30pm at Leicester Arena - the brand new, recently-opened home to national basketball champions, Leicester Riders.

This pioneering, Conference & Exhibition will look at all aspects of growing the game, the business and the social impact of sports like basketball, within the UK.

Businesses, suppliers, manufacturers, clubs, sports governing bodies, charities and anyone with an interest in promoting, marketing and developing sports innovations, as well as those specifically in basketball-related industries, can attend this free event.

They will be able to find out about attracting sponsorship; improving media relations and raising the profile of a sport; see the latest technical developments in the game’s equipment; learn how to develop sports at a grass roots level through innovative community projects; as well as hear about the design and build of the state-of-the-art basketball arena.

The conference is being run as part of the Leicester Business Festival – an annual two week ‘festival’ of free business events all put on by organisations from across Leicestershire, but open to absolutely anyone in the world to attend.

Sponsored by Leicester Castle Business School, the Leicester Business Festival was the first of its kind to be run in the UK and now in its third year, it is by far the largest business event in the region.

There are over 150 events taking place over the fortnight with everything from conferences, seminars, workshops, trade shows to exhibitions, award ceremonies and recruitment fairs.

Events are categorised into a number of sectors including sport and health, marketing and business support, professional services, food and drink, tourism and hospitality, creative industries and many more.

Kevin Routledge, Chairman of Leicester Riders and Director of the British Basketball League is the Business Festival sector lead for sport and health. He said, "Sport is part of Leicester’s culture and heritage and is an integral part of our economy despite not always necessarily being thought of as such.

“The large number of micro businesses that operate here through to the internationally-renowned sports clubs and associations, along with the extensive supply chain, make up a thriving sector that is predicted to see rapid growth. The Business Festival is a chance to draw attention to, and demonstrate the wealth of opportunity presented by the Sport & Health sector."

Other events in the Sport and Health sector taking place over the fortnight include Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport's Annual Conference on Thursday 2nd November, as well as a number of exciting events aimed at improving health and wellbeing in the workplace, such as ‘The Power of Play – Reducing Pressure in the Workplace’, ‘Happy and Healthy Workplaces’, ‘Making Wellbeing Part of Your Corporate Culture and Strategy’ and ‘Mental Wellbeing in the Workplace’.

All the events are completely free to attend but must be booked in advance via the Business Festival website.
